Frequently Asked Questions

My apprentice has been backsliding with their professionalism, like arriving late to scheduled meetings and missing deadlines. What should I do?

First, schedule a 1-on-1 meeting with your apprentice to give them feedback directly whenever they do not meet your expectations. When you meet with your apprentice, address the facts directly: In this example, name which meetings the apprentice was late to, or which deadlines they missed. Name the fact that you’ve noticed a trend of subpar work.

Ask them if there’s something that’s been distracting them lately. (Teenagers may not realize or feel comfortable sharing serious problems that impede their work.)

Lay out very specific deadlines and expectations for future work in writing. Make any implicit expectations explicit, so there’s no gray area for the apprentice.

If the apprentice continues to struggle after this verbal warning, please update your CSM as soon as possible so CareerWise New York can intervene with the apprentice.
